Preservation of flora at the Mirabel quarry

The preservation of wild fauna and flora is one of the sustainable development objectives of Demix. This objective mandated a specialized firm to perform the transplantation of wild garlic and Bloodroot near the Mirabel quarry and track the results of the transplants over a period of three years to help preserve these endangered species. Demix is the proud partner of the urban river remediation in Drummondville

The river remediation project in Cacouna started in 2008 in partnership with the Demix Beton employees at the Drummondville site and the organization GARAF (Groupe d’Aide à la Recherche et à l’Aménagement de la Faune). The main goal of the project is the reintroduction of trout into its natural environment. Read

Holcim’s choice for the 2011 fundraising campaign

Each year, Holcim (Canada) Inc. employees support a charitable organization. This year, a community center of the group Les Auberges du cœur, « L’accueil jeunesse de Lanaudière » was the chosen initiative. Holcim Canada employees participate in “Community supported agriculture”

Holcim Canada employees in Quebec have gotten involved with a certified organic farm for the project “Community supported Agriculture”. They have purchased a series of baskets of organic produce that are delivered weekly to Holcim Canada’s regional office in Longueuil. Eating organic is good, but eating local and organic is even better!

Using recycled aggregates for the construction of Highway 25 : A winning choice!

The Québec and Atlantic region of Holcim Canada was able to successfully reuse materials from its Demix Agrégats Laval quarry concrete and asphalt stock yard in the construction of highway 25. Approximately 200,000 tons of the recycled material was used over the three year span of the project!

Bat roosts at Demix Béton

Demix Béton Drummondville is participating in an innovative project to install bat roosts on its silos and buildings. With the maintenance of wooded areas or through their destruction, the natural habitat of these mammals is diminishing. In order to avoid the disappearance of this species, the group GARAF, the Fauna Foundation of Quebec, the school Jean-Raimbault and the Biodome of Montreal propose integrating artificial roots for the bats.

Dr. Julien's Cause : A project that brings people together

Over the course of two Sundays this past May, approximately 30 Demix Construction employees gave a helping hand in order to pave and asphalt Dr. Julien's side road located behind the pediatric centre Assistance d'enfants en difficulté (AED). During the last several months, Holcim has organized different events to raise the necessary funds to help revitalize a portion of the road where many activities take place for the children, their families and neighbours of the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood.

Mixing concrete for paving

Demix Construction currently operates a portable cement concrete plant. This plant is located in close proximity to construction sites in order to reduce the transportation time of freshly-mixed concrete used in concrete paving.

Demix Béton's ISO 14001:2004 certification renewed without nonconformity

Demix Béton's ISO 14001 audit was successfully completed by on July 9, 2010. The external auditor has confirmed the renewal of the division's environmental management system as we were compliant with all requirements. This external audit demonstrates that environmental management is at the core of the division.

Demix Béton visits Notre-Dame de Saint-Eustache elementary school

Demix Béton was proud to acknowledge the scholastic efforts of the students of Notre-Dame of Saint- Eustache elementary school. On June 2nd, 2010 a concrete mixer came by the school where students were awarded the opportunity to see the truck thanks to the positive reward system the school has in place. They were able to see the concrete mixer and learn about the duties of a concrete ready-mix truck operator.

To celebrate Earth Day, Demix employees were encouraged to take action through the promotion of a more sustainable lifestyle, dropping-off toxic household waste for proper disposal, setting office printers to default to double-sided printing, participating in an after-work celebration at a local bistro and attending a lunch and learn with a composting expert.

Demix Béton to take part in the first construction project in Drummondville to obtain the LEED certification

Demix Béton is proud to be the concrete supplier for the first construction project in Drummondville to obtain the LEED certification. Lead by Les Constructions Allard inc., on behalf of Waste Management, the building will be used as an education center to help facilitate the integration of young people with learning difficulties in the labour market.

Demix, committed to protecting the peregrine falcon

Demix Aggregates has made a tangible commitment to protecting the peregrine falcon by signing a protection agreement with Parc de la Rivière des Milles. This threatened bird species nests on the rock faces of the Laval quarry. In 2005, a young orphaned falcon was successfully introduced into the falcon family in Laval.

The demolition and rebuilding of the North River bridge: an environmental challenge

The reconstruction of the St. Jerome section of northbound Highway 15 in 2008 involved the demolition and rebuilding of a nearly sixty meter- long structure overlooking the North River. Demix Construction completed this project using work methods designed to prevent any impact on the river.

In 2009 Holcim (Canada) Inc. and its Québec division employees raised $29,000 to assist the C.E.S.A.M.E center (Deux-Montagnes center for young children's mental health). The money was raised through the "A Holcim Donation from the Heart!" project organized by employees to support a local cause.
